Jointly for environment! As early as a few decades ago the countries of well-developed economy started to notice that development based on intensive and often wasteful exploitation of natural resources is an example of a blind alley. It turned out that making unlimited use of natural resources leads to the disturbance of the ecological balance and considerable worsening of the living conditions of man who was to be the main beneficiary of the civilisation progress. Thus, new solutions were sought, which would meet the requirements of sustainable development that is economic growth achieved while respecting the principles of the natural environment protection. One way to achieve this objective became norms specifying such management of a business which ensures that the effects of its operation do not have a harmful influence on the environment (the so called ecomanagement). Gradually, environmental management systems were developed, which would make it possible to identify the environmental problems (environmental aspects) in a plant and as a result to successfully manage them. To satisfy such demand for a suitable management system the International Organisation for Standardisation ISO developed an environmental management system in a form of norms in ISO 14000 series. In accordance with ISO norm environmental management system constitutes an integral part of an enterprise’s management system. Having achieved many successes in limiting environmental nuisances in our plants as well as implementing and certifying quality management system in accordance with ISO 9001 norm, BSO Polska decided to take the next step that was to implement the environmental management system based on PN EN 14001 norm. Joint efforts and involvement of both management and all employees resulted in the environmental management system implementation on corporate and local level. In each plant belonging to BSO Group environmental working teams were formed. Their tasks were to identify environmental aspects as well as develop and implement environmental procedures and instructions. They supervise all significant aspects considerably affecting environment. It does not only refer to the reductions in emissions of pollutants into the environment but also to raising employees’ ecological awareness. Environmental issues can also be found in the timetables of trainings for growers, which are run by Agriculture departments. They promote ecological rules of using chemical fertilizers and dealing with pesticide packaging waste.
