Sugar Beet Crop in Poland
Sugar Beet is a cornerstone crop of arable rotations, and nationally accounts for circa 300 thousand hectares and 80 thousand growers.
Commonly grown in conjunction with wheat, barley or pulses, sugar beet is a valuable break crop in the rotation, preventing the build up of crop diseases, providing the opportunity to control difficult weeds and improve soil structure as well as giving a good financial return.
Sugar beet is grown on a contract arrangement with the processor assuring a guaranteed price and market for the crop.
In Poland, BSO co-operates closely with farmers as it does in the UK. Activities are focused on improving farming techniques to increase beet yields, quality and sugar contents which improve growers financial returns.
There is a team of Agriculture Development Officers operating in BSO’s factories. Through carrying out trial and demonstration fields they show on typical Polish farms that it is possible to achieve profitable, very high yielding, high sugar content crops of sugar beet. The Inspectors and other factory agricultural staff are also responsible for advising growers of improved techniques and encouraging growers to improve their production methods.
